Description
Community Safety has a challenging opportunity for experienced, highly motivated individuals interested in continuing their law enforcement career as a Saskatchewan Highway Patrol Officer.
Qualifications
To qualify for this position, candidates must be a Canadian citizen or permanent resident legally entitled to work in Canada and have been employed full-time within the past three years as a Canadian police officer, Special Constable, or federally appointed law enforcement officer such as a Fisheries or Game Officer. Applicants must be a graduate of a recruit training course recognized by the Saskatchewan Police Commission and have been employed as a member of a Canadian police service within the past three years, although other law enforcement training may be reviewed and considered. Candidates are required to successfully pass the Police Officers Physical Assessment Training (POPAT) with a time of 4:45 or less at an approved testing facility, with valid certification provided prior to interviews and dated within six months of the job posting. Successful applicants must also complete scheduled physical and medical assessments, possess and produce a valid Canadian driver’s licence (with a certified driver’s abstract to be requested at a later date), and hold a valid First Aid Certificate including AED that is valid to April 2027 or beyond. In addition, candidates must successfully complete a psychological personality assessment (MMPI), demonstrate good moral character and habits, and, if successful through the application process, complete ten weeks of commercial vehicle training delivered by the Saskatchewan Highway Patrol.
The role requires the ability to work variable hours, including evenings and weekends, and to travel with overnight stays away from the home detachment. Typically, the knowledge and experience needed to be successful in this position would be supported by a bachelor’s degree or college diploma in police science, criminal justice, public administration, or a related field, although equivalent combinations of education and experience will be considered.
Responsibilities
The Ministry is seeking to fill two permanent positions across the province. In this role, Officers inspect commercial vehicles and verify operator compliance with provincial and federal transportation legislation, enforce traffic safety laws and related regulations, and conduct roadside inspections, investigations, and interviews. The position involves issuing charges, appearing in court, attending motor vehicle accidents, and preparing detailed reports while applying knowledge of legal and court procedures and providing testimony when required. Officers also deliver public and industry education and awareness programs to municipal officials, police forces, transport companies, interest groups, and the general public. The role requires professional interaction with team members, enforcement partners, government agencies, and the commercial transportation industry, as well as the physical ability to inspect vehicles and cargo to Commercial Vehicle Safety Alliance standards. Successful candidates must also be willing and capable of carrying and handling firearms and other use-of-force intervention options.
