Qualifications
• Canadian Citizen
• Possess a valid Class 5 Driver’s Licence
• Enrolled in an accredited institution studying agriculture, biology, environmental science, or a related field.
• Returning to school after their work term
• Possess strong oral communication and listening skills
• Computer literacy in Microsoft Excel, Word, PowerPoint, Outlook
• Ability and willingness to travel
• Ability and willingness to work overtime including evening and weekends (compensated with time off)
• Ability and willingness to work under various environmental and weather conditions, with exposure to insects
• Ability and willingness to work with high levels of noise and dust.
• Ability and willingness to control allergies, through the use of personal protective equipment and/or medication without impinging on the duties to be performed.
• Ability and willingness to perform physically demanding work activities, including moderate to heavy manual work requiring bending and lifting heavy objects (up to 22 kg).
• Ability and willingness to work in field, laboratory, and greenhouse environments.
• Ability and willingness to operate various farm, plot, greenhouse, and lab equipment.
• Ability and willingness to work with chemicals, pesticides and other hazardous materials.
• Ability and willingness to sit for long periods at a lab bench making observations or handling samples.
Responsibilities
Areas of Work: We are seeking an enthusiastic student to work with the Agronomy & Crop Adaptation Team at the Beaverlodge Research Farm. The Agronomy & Crop Adaptation Team is comprised of the farm management group, as well as four research programs: Agronomy, Cereal Crop Adaptation, Oilseed Crop Adaptation, and Plant Pathology.
Duties: The position will involve on-site field, greenhouse, and laboratory research, and entails assisting labour and technical staff with preparing, maintaining, and harvesting annual field plots; sampling of soil and plants in agricultural field crops; processing of soil, plant, and grain samples; performing data collection and data entry. Off-site soil, plant, and air sampling may also be required.
Pay Rate
$21.60+ per hour
