Description
Founded as a biological consulting firm in 2006, Bear Tracks’ experience portfolio has since grown to include an array of environmental consulting services, allowing us to meet the various needs of our industry and government clientele.
Wanting to be part of a vibrant team is a must. We take our work seriously, but fully understand that people have lives outside of their job. We like to keep it light, while providing an amazing product for our clients. This may not work for all companies, but it’s worked well for us. The successful candidate will primarily be responsible for supporting the GIS lead, preparing cartographic products, spatial data processing and manipulation, digitizing, and other duties as required. Additional tasks may include data and reporting support. Proficiency in ArcGIS Pro and Microsoft software (e.g., Word, Excel) and experience in the environmental field is a must. Experience with other GIS software (e.g., QGIS) and wetland delineation is considered an asset.
Qualifications
Candidates will have the following qualifications and experience:
• Possess a diploma or degree, preferably with a GIS focus.
• At least two years of experience working in a professional GIS environment.
• Extensive knowledge and experience using ArcGIS Pro and other ESRI applications.
• Firm knowledge of spatial data structures, terminology, and formats as well as common coordinate systems.
• Demonstrate expertise in cartography and geospatial visualization techniques to effectively communicate environmental data.
• Strong understanding of environmental data, including land cover, land use, and hydrology
• Experience with remote sensing data such as air photos, satellite imagery, LiDAR
• Strong attention to detail and highly organized.
• Proficient in Microsoft Word and Excel.
Assets for the position include:
• Other GIS/spatial data software experience such as QGIS, Google Earth, WebODM, Map Pilot Pro, etc.
• Experience with programming/scripting (e.g., JavaScript, Python) and ArcGIS Model Builder.
• Has experience in the environmental consulting field and is familiar with data produced by disciplines such as soils, vegetation, wildlife, and wetlands.
• Wetland delineation and classification experience.
• Strong writing skills.
Responsibilities
Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:
• Data Collection and Management: Gather, input, and maintain spatial data from various sources.
• GIS Mapping and Data Manipulation: Create and update cartographic maps, layers, and spatial data to support decision-making processes.
• Geospatial Data Editing: Clean, edit, and validate geospatial data to ensure accuracy and consistency.
• Map Creation: Design and produce custom maps for clients or internal purposes, ensuring clarity and accuracy in data representation.
• Database Management: Organize and assist in the management of GIS files, ensuring efficient storage, retrieval, and backup of data.
• Coordinate with Teams: Work with environmental consultants to integrate GIS data into their projects.
• Report Generation: Compile and prepare reports, maps, and charts based on GIS data for various stakeholders.
• Quality Control: Perform quality checks on GIS data to ensure it meets required standards and specifications.
• Research and Development: Stay updated on the latest GIS technologies, trends, and best practices to improve data accuracy and efficiency.
• Training and Documentation: Assist in training/troubleshooting with other GIS users within the company and assist in the development of user guides or documentation.
