Description
Bear Tracks Environmental Services (2015) Ltd. is seeking seasonal Environmental Technician(s) to join our fast-growing team for contract positions in Lethbridge, AB for the 2025 field season.
Founded as a biological consulting firm in 2006, Bear Tracks’ experience portfolio has since grown to include an array of environmental consulting services, allowing us to meet the various needs of our industry and government clientele.
Wanting to be part of a vibrant team is a must. We take our work seriously, but fully understand that people have lives outside of their job. We like to keep it light, while providing an amazing product for our clients. This may not work for all companies, but it’s worked well for us.
The successful candidates will primarily be responsible for conducting field-level environmental assessments (e.g., wildlife, fisheries, water quality, soils, wetlands, etc.), assisting with data management and preparing reporting deliverables. The ability to identify prairie wildlife species (by sight and sound) would be desirable for the position. Weekly schedules are typically 5 and 2; however, depending on the project, you may be expected to work remotely on a rotating shift. You will sometimes be asked to work alone, and this position may also require some early mornings and late nights.
You should be familiar with survey/sampling protocols for various wildlife species, fisheries assessments, vegetation assessments, and wetland evaluations. Familiarity with GIS would be considered an asset.
Qualifications
Candidates will have the following qualifications and experience:
• Bachelor’s degree or technical diploma or currently enrolled in a post-secondary program related to wildlife biology, zoology, environmental science, or similar discipline.
• Minimum 1 season of field experience, with some of that experience preferably gained from a consulting background.
• Knowledge of provincial and federal regulations, approval processes, and guidelines.
• Proficiency with Microsoft Word and Excel.
• Currently registered as a P.Biol. or BIT, or eligible for registration as a Professional Biologist in Alberta.
• Experience working in southern Alberta with a focus on prairie wildlife species.
• Ability to detect wildlife species by sight and sound and identify sensitive habitat features associated with various wildlife species.
• Must work well with others and be organized. Organization is vital as you will be responsible for working on various projects concurrently.
• Ability to read a map and use a GPS. It seems simple, but some people lack this skill.
• Valid Class 5 driver’s license, H2S Alive, TDG, ATV safe rider, and First Aid are required. If you don’t have any of these currently, we can work on getting them for you.
Assets for the positions include:
• ArcGIS or QGIS knowledge.
• Plant identification skills.
• Experience with fish habitat assessments or fish salvages
• Experience with water quality monitoring
• Experience with wetland assessments.
• Experience with soils assessments
Responsibilities
Responsibilities for this position include but are not limited to:
• Compile and organize data from various field programs.
• Support the writing of technical reports.
• Support breeding bird and avian migration surveys.
• Support species-specific surveys, including but not limited to sharp-tailed grouse, burrowing owl, sensitive raptors, amphibian call surveys, snake hibernacula surveys, and short-horned lizard surveys.
• Support other environmental assessment programs for soils, wetlands, and vegetation.
• Provide updates to senior staff as to the progress of various field programs.
