Qualifications
- A High School diploma or equivalency (e.g. GED) and at least 2 years of experience providing customer service to the public, handling situations that require problem solving and/or conflict resolution.
- Computer proficiency and a minimum typing speed of 35 words per minute.
- Applicants must possess knowledge of Calgary streets, facilities, landmarks, and communities.
- Preference will be given to applicants who have the following:
- Experience working or volunteering in emergency response, in a high-pressure or high-volume call centre and in a shift work environment.
- Additional education, courses in public safety, emergency communications, criminology, justice studies or a completed 1 year Public Safety Communications certificate.
- Fluency in a second language.
- Experience working or volunteering with high risk and vulnerable populations.
- Success in this position requires the following competencies:

Responsibilities
Calgary 9-1-1 answers emergency and non-emergency calls and provides dispatch services for the Calgary Police Service, Calgary Fire Department, and several regional partners. We answer more than one million calls per year, making Calgary 9-1-1 one of the largest 9-1-1 centres in Canada. Before the Police arrive, before the Fire Department comes, 9-1-1 is there. As an Emergency Communications Officer (ECO) you will serve as the lifeline between people who desperately need help and the emergency services who can help them. Every shift is different and each call you take will be a new and exciting challenge. As the first of the first responders, you will perform meaningful work and will have the opportunity to help to make your community a better place to live. Primary duties include:
- Answer emergency and non-emergency calls for Police and Fire departments.
- Help callers and provide clear, concise instructions, and life-saving instructions when required.
- Create reports and other communications accurately and with concise details for the safety of officers.
- Relay information to dispatchers and appropriate services.
